Woe unto you, oh power metal...

#1 Post by TraneDeracs » 22 Apr 2010 16:23

Here I sit, listening to the song "Majesty" for the twentieth time, and a thought comes to me. The thought is "You know, I'd like to check out more power metal bands besides the one's I've known for some time."

Therefore I jumped on youtube and began looking to and 'fro for a new horizon in power metal. After trying out Cain's Offering, Dark Empire to name a few, I realized that I was here before many times ago. It seems to me that power metal is not well... powerful enough for me in this day and age.

Yes, I know of the beauty of Falconer, the sheer power of Urban Breed's vocals in Tad Morose, the awesomeness that is Morgana Lefay...but alas, I find more "power metal" and that classic sound in the more recent Therion albums moreso than in the genre itself.

Would some of you kind Bards around the old forum tavern be kind enough to help a travelling man find his beloved POWER metal?

You might try Persuader, especially their latest album "When Eden Burns"

Few other suggestions:

-Wuthering Heights
-Sinbreed
-Savage Circus
-Masterplan
-Nocturnal Rites (especially their album Grand Illusion)
-Symphorce
-Orden Ogan

Most of these bands are more rough than usual power metal, so you might find something you like

Grave Digger and Rage, can't go wrong on those, also Helstar, though i wouldn't categorize them into power metal,it's more like really really raw technical heavy power, kickass solos BTW.

Try these contemporary bands:
Twisted Tower Dire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm3f1ydlj9U
Crescent Shield: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWXwRpiN72Y
Dark At Dawn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=795gDjnpZhM (the sound of the video is worse than on the actual album)
Iron Sword: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArN7fxtZWSI
Ilium: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etsvAqFd5Ow
Jack Starr's Burning Starr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QOFSyBqVxI
Powerwolf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6ysxB48ZSk
Sabaton: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrJAwCBbnuc
A Tortured Soul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zinX5vWClM
Battleroar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6EtG_NusGI

And if you're not already familiar with them, those classics:
Omen - Battlecry, Warning of Danger & The Curse ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwI7YGjSTF8 )
Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYVSSVklHls )
Destiny's End - Breath Deep The Dark & Transition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru0hK5Aims8 )
Scanner - Hypertrace ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KdS5ujnVWs )

Enjoy.

Definitely check out Wuthering Heights, or at least their two most recent albums (The Shadow Cabinet and Salt).

Also check out Suspyre (my favorite band BTW), especially The Silvery Image if you like old BG, although A Great Divide is my favorite album of theirs.

You could as well try Destination's Calling, a German newcomer band. They sound a bit like a heavy and good version of Edguy.

Besides, there are also the absolutely underrated power/prog Metal heroes of Lanfear...

It's been years since I bought or downloaded a new power metal album, so I have absolutely no clue what's going on in that genre at the moment.
You charge each other for the time and breath it takes to say 'good morning',
But the truth is slowly dawning -- things are getting out of hand,
We all pursue our shattered dreams along the roads to our own ruin --
Watch our empires sink and wash away like castles made of sand.
And so cast off the lies that are your lives and find the truth within.

You know what I did?

Went on the "List of Power Metal Bands" on Wikipedia, closed my eyes, scrolled around, and checked out whatever band it landed on.

Thus', I found Assailant and LORD. :)

I haven't paid much attention to power metal in a long time but there are some gems in here that caught my ear. Powerwolf and Dark at Dawn in particular. Attila Dorn really has a fantastic voice. I mean, a voice hasn't caught my ear like that in a very long time. Probably not since I first played Somewhere Far Beyond. Thanks t.a.j. :)

Well whaddaya know, neither of the bands th OP made me think of have been mentioned yet.

Kiuas:
Not exactly power metal, but close enough I think. Kinda like "What the genre name SHOULD mean." :P They have many very intense and dramatic songs that just might do the trick if it's the power you've been missing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpE2eqPbapk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNmXrlNFIdk
The vocalist is great, he has a very versatile and powerful voice.

Hibria:
Now this is Old School power metal, harkening back to the times where the word Metal meant something and the bass guitar was a real instrument. Hell yeah.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKQstdpRstY
Seriously, look at that album cover in the second "video". It's a guy on a motorbike swordfighting a ninja who is also on a goddamn motorbike. Holy bloody shit.
And The Lord said unto John: 'Come forth and receive eternal life'.
But John came fifth, and won a toaster.

I dunno. Poke around some webshops, you might find it. CDon sells them in Scandinavia and Finland, so I suppose it might be found in Germany too.

Really nice song though the main riff really reminds me of some Persuader song (From the hunter album) But cant remember which. Nice vocals tho, sounds like a mix between tony moore (Ex-Riot) and Bruce Dickinson (My opinion) Definitly good power metal!

8) Awesome lists fellas. Like to know many are at least trying out there. Sabaton, Grave Digger, Rage, and a few others I've known of but it's nice to see some up and coming acts as well.

Thanks to all who helped me discover these so far.
