Barend Courbois, the new Bard

#1 Post by ErHaO » 29 Jan 2015 04:07

I think this warrants a new thread. We knew he was playing on the new album and joins them for the upcoming tour.

What is new to me, however, is that he is apparently a full member (unlike Oliver). So now we have five Bards, which is a first in their career.

As for his performance, I wouldn't know. Hopefully he will be audible live. At least there are parts on Beyond the Red Mirror where you can hear some of the stuff he plays (not only Distant Memories).

Quote from the BG facebook:
Introducing our new bass player Barend Courbois!
In the course of his career he had played over 4,000 shows and recorded over 60 albums. He worked together with musicians like Adrian Vandenberg (WHITESKNAKE), Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE) and Atma Anur (JOURNEY). In 2004 he has been voted as best metal and allround bass player by Guitar Player magazine.

His name is Barend Courbois, and he is the new bass player of BLIND GUARDIAN. Fans will be able to enjoy his skills on the new BLIND GUARDIAN album,Beyond The Red Mirror.

“This was the longest production I have ever been involved in,” the Dutch musician explains. “As we all know, the recordings took a total of two years. The music is so versatile, which is just what makes the style of BLIND GUARDIAN so unique.”
Regarding his own style, Courbois is quite confident: “I play in a very powerful, but also melodic way,” he explains. “You could compare me to John Deacon. Something that QUEEN-fans Hansi Kürsch and Gitarrist André Olbrich really like.”
Frontman Hansi Kürsch confirms: “Barend is top. He is the ideal bass player for us and has a lot of musical understanding. He is variable and multifaceted, but still able to create all the power we need. And the fact that Krefeld is so close to the Dutch border makes our liaison really easy.”

Music has always been in Barend’s (who studied bass at Lyceum in Arnhem) blood. His father Pierre (74) is a world-famous jazz drummer and still performing on stage and had played alongside superstars like Jean-Luc Ponty and Ben Webster. At the age of four Barend started playing drums himself, at age eight he first picked up the bass and for quite a while enjoyed bagpipes as well. No wonder he feels right at home everywhere from rock and metal to jazz and funk.

The way he got in touch with BLIND GUARDIAN is not as spectacular as one might think. “One day I got an unexpected phone call from producer Charlie Bauerfeind, whom I had met at a project we both were involved in the early 90s,“ the bass player recalls. “He asked me, if I was available during the next six months, to tour with a major metal band. He wouldn´t tell me the band´s name at first though.”

Just one day after agreeing to this new engagement, Barend Courbois met BLIND GUARDIAN in Krefeld, only to find himself on tour two weeks later. „I was a total wreck before my first gig: It’s a real challenge to play BLIND GUARDIAN songs, but I love it!”
BLIND GUARDIAN will release their highly-anticipated tenth studio release, Beyond The Red Mirror, on January 30th in Europe, February 2nd in the UK and February 3rd, 2015 in North America.

He's a beast.
Son of a really well known bass player.

Welcome on board, then! but yeah, it's weird that Oliver was never a band member and he is... and I bet the dutchies will be happy to have sneaked one of their own into the band :P :P :P

I wonder if he can speak German then... Otherwise the entire band would have to communicate in English.

As a Dutchman myself, I am proud indeed :D

And I do not think his German would be a problem, most Dutch people near the border speak it or learn it quite fast otherwise, because they hear it all the time.

I don't think he's the fifth at all.
Even in the booklet and promo pics they are still 4 (they should have been 3)

Spot on bro!
If you go to the facebook pages you can see how much Thomen is still loved.
There's no denying that.

I think my adversity against Frederik is right in him being the fourth.
I really think it was unfair (I think this is the really fitting word) to make Frederik one of the four unlike Oliver and Mi that had been "in the band" for a longer span of time.
If BG announced "hey, we have a new drummer and we decided to increase the line up to 6" I would have swallowed it better.
I know there's that thing about being fine in writing in 4, but it's quite bullshit, since we all know how's songwriting is done inside BG, where even Marcus' ideas are used for b-sides.

Indeed he is not in the booklets and recent promo pictures/magazine covers. Maybe the people on fb are wrong then, but there are several saying he's not a session member. But then again, the official announcement/full introduction of him was just a few days ago so maybe the decision was recent? We'll see in the future I guess.

Anyway, monster player is monster

(He's even too much for BG in my opinion, but same I said even for Oliver that is just as good as Barend AND has an easier name)

How is he knew if he was working with the band while making this album, for 2 years or so (or so I read)?

He's amazing, it's really a pity you can hardly hear him on the album. He's clearly audible on two or three parts and there the bass lines sound much more innovative than on previous albums.

By the way: The Earbook clearly states him as "guest musician".

I specifically noticed him in "Ashes of Eternity". lol. Not much else to say. He can definitely shred though.

In Twilight of the Gods he can be audible as well at points. And his presence is pretty clear on Doom, which took me by surprise (even a very minor moment with just him playing near the end, BG should explore this more).

Baby steps, the drums are only starting to sound decent again...still nothing on the drum sound from IFTOS or NIME :(

Maybe in 2 or 3 albums we will have a recognizable bass line to cheer about.

:?
I would have preferred him to be the 5th.
The concept helped me to accept Frederik, but now we're back to square 1.

Hey there,

I just read an Interview from deadrhetoric:
http://deadrhetoric.com/features/blind- ... ever-fade/
Dead Rhetoric: Have to start with this: It’s always been the four of you guys, now you’re a quintet. What made you take the leap and add Barend to the band?

Hansi Kürsch: You know what? It was just a misunderstanding in general. It was just meant to be an introduction for people who wanted to know something about the bassist. We thought, “We’ll use this opportunity to introduce him via our Facebook and homepage.” People misunderstood. He has the same status as [former session/touring bassist] Oliver Holzwarth.
Regards
