At the Edge of Time's rank in the BG discography

#1 Post by Alpha Penguin » 04 Aug 2010 20:33

I just got my copy of At the Edge of Time in the mail today, I put the album on my iPod and listened to the album uninterrupted, start to finish. Anyways, I've seen the people's negative opinions of the production, the songs, pacing, etc. But I absolutely disagree, as a matter of fact I think this is the best Blind Guardian album since Nightfall in Middle Earth...definitely the most unique stylistically I think. It's not too epic and sterile like some other "epic" metal bands, it's the most perfect blend of power, thrash, prog, and epic music that I've ever heard.

Where would you guys rank At the Edge of Time in the top 5 Blind Guardian albums?
I would probably say:
1. Nightfall in Middle Earth
2. Imaginations From the Other Side
3. At the Edge of Time
4. A Night at the Opera
5. Tales From the Twilight World
How can we take it away from someone who has no right--no right to control the divine!!

That's as much of a ranking that I can produce.

1: Iftos, Nime
2: Anato, Ateot
3: Atitm, Sfb
4: Tfttw
5: BoF
6: FtB

I can't say which is best for me in each of those tiers. They're so close that it would be unfair to call one better than the other. I'm not sure about Ateot yet though, I just speculate on where it will end up in my head a few years from now.

That's what I decided to call the album for confusion's sake because it's a way cooler title.

Agreed ^_^ But the album isnt based on the Wheel Of Time. Screw that, it's not based on anyone who is "at the edge of time" either lol.

3. A Night at the Opera / At The Edge Of Time
4. Somewhere Far Beyond

i think ANATO is the hardest one to rate due to it's complexicity,i'd even say it stands apart from other BG works,it's hard to digest and takes time to understand the song structures.
Like it though. As for catchiness of songs,i guess IFTOS is number one, followed by "the rest".
that said
i'll only put three albums on my ratings

1Imaginations
2Nightfall
3Twist

I don't know the others well enough to rank them, but I will rank the ones I know very well.

1. A Night At The Opera
2. At The Edge Of Time
3. Nightfall In Middle-Earth
4. Imaginations From The Other Side / Somewhere Far Beyond (tie)

Favorite to least favorite. Definitely not a best to worst as none of those albums are bad by any means!

And hopefully I'll get a chance to really appreciate the others someday.

1. Nightfall in Middle-Earth
(The first record I heard of them and was in love ever since. For me it's a masterpiece.)
2. At the Edge of Time
(I really love this album. I've listened to it numerous times now and I enjoy it every time. André said that he was still looking for that
perfect masterpiece album and I think with this release they're definitely on the right track. Even though this one just got out I have
even higher hopes for the next 10th album. And also the Orchestral Project.)
3. Imaginations From the Other Side
(Such an fabulous album, an instant classic. Lots of inspired excellent songs.)
4. Somewhere Far Beyond
(Lots of great music on this one as well.)
5. A Night at the Opera
(When I first heard the new one I was surprised at the change of direction. I had to get used to it but eventually it grew on me and I
liked it. ATTWS still remains my nr. 1 favorite. I'm glad I wrote "Dragonlance" at the time when BG asked the fans to come up with a
theme for one of the songs, The Souldforged still is an excellent song.)
6. A Twist in the Myth
(Has excellent work on it but for some reason it didn't really hold up against their previous works. Then again, they were experimenting
to work on that new sound/direction and I definitely think it's good that they did. At times as a composer or musician it's good to leave
the comfort zone and try something new and see where it leads you.)
7. Tales from the Twilight World
(Lots of great classics on this album, like Traveler in Time, Welcome to Dying, Lord of the Rings and Lost in the Twilight Hall.)
8. Battalions of Fear
(A nice debut with some excellent songs. I especially love the latter instrumental works. I used to play By the Gates of Moria along with
the guitar. Excellent track.)
9. Follow the Blind
(My least favorite album but there's definitely music on there I really like, Banish from Sanctuary, Valhalla! And I remember really liking
the instrumental work like Beyond the Ice. It inspired me to compose my own instrumental works with my guitar at the time. Perhaps
it's thanks to BG that I'm now working as a film composer.)

It's really hard to rank the albums because all of them have excellent work on them. I can't remember when I didn't like at least a couple of songs or played along with my guitar on a few songs in the lowest ranked albums. But the top albums definitely touch my heartstrings and are the once I'll always love.

Interesting to see how varied the lists are.

I haven't heard AtEoT yet because I'm still waiting for my pyramid to make it to the States (and I don't want to hear anything until I actually have the album), so I'll have to wait to include mine.

Anyway, isn't a bit too early to judge it properly?? I do not even remember well yet half of the songs... I still have to understand what's going on with Wheel of Time! :P

Same goes for me, Ara... until I know every song and every damn line of every goddamn song by heart, there can be no judgement.

Damn, I wonder what happened to this forum during the years of my abscence.. when I spammed around in these twilight halls, a clear majority used to hate ANATO.. and even its fans wouldn't have rated it higher than NiME and IFTOS.. times change, eh?

Finally people saw the fucking light and the greatness of ANATO! I always said it was the best!
Each step I take,
May it hurt may it ache
Leads me further
Away from the past!
But as long as I breathe,
Each smile in my bleak face,
I'm on my way to find
Back to the peace of mind!

"Finally"? I praised ANATO since day one and I still do 8)

A slight call afar is tempting me, like a whisper sweet or an awful scream; I cannot ignore what I've always been, I'm leaving again - one last time? in my little kingdom I can be what I really wanted to be... The wanderer

There's still the beep in 'Under the ice' :P
And I still can't stand ANATO  [However, I like it more than ATITM - it's quite a wonder that I love ATEOT so much  ]

The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight is one of the fucking best songs ever written. This one's alone a reason to love the mighty ANATO. (not "almighty" anymore as ATEOT is at least equal 8) )

Nah, ATEOT has some major flaws. Tanelorn, Valkyries, and A Voice in the Dark.

Tanelorn and AVITD got really stale REALLY quick for me.

Nothing on ANATO has ever gotten stale.

No doubt this is the best BG album since NIME.
IFTOS and NIME are certainly their best efforts, but after that it gets tricky. Only time will tell if I end up enjoying At the Edge of Time more than I like SFB. So 3rd/4th best album in BG's discography in my opinion.
I still am the terror that flaps in the night!

I'd personally consider Wait for an Answer and The Soulforged to be more "eh." So a couple of flaws. Tanelorn, as I've stated elsewhere, is fantastic, and AVitD is pretty good too. Don't know about Valkyries yet.
