Lyrics themes. What would you like BG to sing about?

Lyrics themes. What would you like BG to sing about?

#1 Post by willy_poodle » 22 Jun 2009 20:11

I would like songs based on:

1. "Thief" games trilogy
2. "Willow" movie
3. Some more songs based on Tad Williams' books
4. "Robin Of Sherwood" cult series
5. "Thorgal" comics
6. "The Princess Bride" movie/book
7. Charles Dickens' books
8. other movies like: "Talking To Heavens", "Donnie Darko", "Communion", "Fire In The Sky"
9. He-Man cartoons from the 80s
But I'm not sure of anything

Heh. Somehow, I can't see Hansi singing about Charles Dickens books. The rest of it, maybe. Personally I'd like to see some lyrics about some of the fantasy series I prefer, such as the Wheel of Time series (which it seems may be in the new album) and definitely the Sword of Truth series, both of which are rather Tolkien-ish.
Although, to be honest, it's always been more about the sound for me than about the lyrics. I enjoy good lyrics of course, but I'm okay with whatever as long as it sounds good.

1. Thief sounds good. Though dunno what the lyrics would be exactly though.
2. Also the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy could be a nice lyrics source.
3. Some angels and demons stuff, heaven and hell etc. could be inspired from Diablo
4. Hmm WW2? But i doubt hansi will write about that.
Now I'm riding through the air
Going to where no one dares
On the way I cross the line forevermore.
For once in life, I do not care
Nothing matters, now I dare
On the ride I'll cross the line
Forever to be free

I've tried and read about a half of it, but it was mostly about everybody going to bed with each other. Worse than in soap opera. Is G.G.Kay kind of erotomaniac or what?

I think some topics are too serious for heavy metal, which shoud be entertainment. It would fit more to thrash or hardcore anyway.
Well, maybe it is interesting topic, but I just prefer lighter songs.
In my home country everybody still remembers WW2 and tries to keep old conflicts alive instead of repairing relations.

I've read the first book and it was nothing like that.

A Matter of Life and Death had pretty good lyrics. Also Paschendale from the previous album. I dont think it could be a problem. But maybe its not fitting Blind Guardian too much.

They have covered Satan's "Trial by Fire", and some have suggested that "Wait for an Answer" might be a mythologized metaphor for the Holocaust and WW2 in general.

I'd like him to sing about real life stuff. His best lyrics (Age of False Innocence, Punishment Divine) are based off of the real world.

I think his best lyrics ever made are in And then there was silence about the Trojan war. Real, myth, who knows? :P

I want them to write something about Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere now that I read it!
"There's a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny's lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The truth is I've always been a fool"

A slight call afar is tempting me, like a whisper sweet or an awful scream; I cannot ignore what I've always been, I'm leaving again - one last time? in my little kingdom I can be what I really wanted to be... The wanderer

More classical myths! No specific ones in mind, but they should just browse cultural myths for material.

They need to make this entire new album about dwarves, and how awesome they are.
Dwarves are cruise control for cool, obviously.
(I'm just kidding of course, though I do love dwarves.)
Personally, I don't really care - I would PREFER fantasy lyrics though.
Maybe I'm just a nerd, but if Blind Guardian started singing exclusively about "real world" subjects...I dunno, it just wouldn't seem right in my honest opinion.

More Tolkien, no doubt about it  :D

If not that I wouldn't mind hearing about some stuff from the Farseer Trilogy

I was beginning to wonder if I would be the first one to suggest SoIaF, I tought the series was one of the most acknowledged fantasy series of the 2000's. So I would prefer "real life stuff" but if and when Hansi decides to write more about fantasy topics, he should definitely do something with Song of Ice and Fire. Awesome series.

Awesome series indeed, and so chock full of dramatic scenarios and tragedy that it's (imo) even more suitable for picking lyrics themes from than most other books/series.

A WWII commentary would be cool actually. It could go in Tarantino's new flick. Inglourious bAsterds... though that comes out tonight so I doubt that'll happen...

A song about the film District 9 would be quite epic I believe too... t'would also serve as a commentary on apartheid.

and here's one for Frederik: a song about the Legend of Zelda, or any nintendo franchise really... (i know he loves metroid at least.)

When sticking with Tolkien.. it kind of jumped at me yesterday that a ballad about the sea-longing of the elves could be kind of cool (I was standing at the beach and noticed that in my inner song library I seriously lack beautiful songs about the sea).

China Mieville's Perdito Street Station and R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series.

Formerly I thought that A Song of Ice and Fire was the single best piece of fantasy fiction ever. Not it's a triumphvirate!

i think they should sing more about Tolkien
Blind Guardian for me represents the magic of "old", same as JRR Tolkien.
like the first sentences on LOTR fellowship of the ring movie, when the narrator
(galadrial) speaks about how the world is changing, for me it is not far from reality
here on earth. the world, with its natural magic will be gone. like when merry tells
pippin about "all that is green in good in this world.." when they are in fangorn forest
with treebeard. for me BG and Tolkien represents the essence of adventure, freedom,
beauty and nature. this is what i hear in BG anyway. they should stick to that, and
in a way that is rocking and beautiful at the same time.

There is definitly alot of Tolkiens writings that they have not even touched yet. So they can never go wrong with Tolkien. I also would think it would be cool if they wrote some songs based on the Chronicles of Narnia.

What about WoW themed album. That way we can listen as we're playing, and they seem to be very knowledgeable in the subject. I agree with the LotR continuation, or other fantasy classics. I'm currently reading the Earthsea series and it would make for great music.

Indeed, that is clearly a song about WoW-addiction. And they even give a healthier alternative to it in the song...
You're part of the game
You're slave to the grind
Oblivion.

EDIT: Which got me thinking, The Elder Scrolls is a damn great fantasy setting, loaded chock full of interesting lore... some power metal band actually used a cover of the Oblivion main theme as their album intro already. Doesn't sound bad at all, really.
I personally wouldn't mind if BG did an Elder Scrolls concept album. Maybe about the Nine Divines? A song for each deity, that's a handy length for an album. :P

Hansi should write a song speaking about the changes on Michael Jackson's skin

I'm always for more songs of Middle-Earth and Tolkien books. Can't go wrong there. :)
Arda has such a nice atmosphere when you read the books. There are some other nice fantasy worlds, but Tolkien's is just perfect, a real epic feeling I have when i read it. And the songs Blind Guardian made about it, sound the same...epic.

Well his Neverland Ranch would be worth it but not Michael (not that he´s a bad guy...but...)...his ranch is more BG-like...maybe :)

I would like to see more things Hansi made up.
I took the opportunity to write my own fictional storyboard about the moment he went insane and had his own dialogue with God; although he denied his existence.
(about Punishment Divine)

And I would like him to write a book one day, but I don't believe that will ever happen.
Well, who knows (except maybe Hansi)?

I think he´s better in writing songs than writing a whole story :P
